As an officer I was taught how to lead and manage, and what the difference is between the two. I was taught how to persevere and never give up in pursuit of your passion and goals, which are the same as "the mission". I was also taught and shown through example how to care for your people and give them the best opportunities to succeed without being over-managed. Give them training, guidance when necessary, and room to experiment and fail within boundaries, and they will grow into new leaders.
